Summer Reflections

Summer 2008: Losin' It and Livin' It

From Becky Goetz, Co-Director

Campers at Cross Hill The pool is closed and the cabins are cleaned out as we change gears from summer camping to the retreat season. As I reflect back on June, July and August, it was a summer filled with busy days, long nights and the joy that comes from sharing the gospel with almost 500 young people who came through our gates.

We provided Vacation Bible School programming to eleven congregations, and forged some strong relationships with children and pastors. Our second season of offering swimming lessons to the community was well received, and in spite of daily storms the second week of June, the kids did learn new skills.

A highlight for our staff was the Counselor In Training Program with twelve high school students spending two weeks at the camp for training and working with our elementary age campers. This outstanding group of young people from around the synod will be our summer and program staff in the coming years. They have servant hearts, and a love for the Lord that shows whether they are asked to play games with the campers or clean the bathrooms! Many of these same CIT's came back during the summer as campers, as volunteers and even as paid Junior Counselors

We added a new camp for girls: Victory Volley Ball Camp! This camp was held in June under the direction of Coach Craig Case, the Women's Volley Ball coach at VCSU.  We will offer this camp again next summer, and hope to attract up to 25 girls for the camp.

Our 4th annual Holy Hoops Basket Ball Camp was also a success, with 34 Junior High students attending advanced Holy Hoops and 55 attending Elementary Holy Hoops. Our inspirational speaker, Erv Inninger invited a friend of his to join him at the Cooperstown Gym both weeks; Amy Ruley, former coach of the NDSU Women's Basket Ball team spoke to the campers about the importance of having a positive attitude and working hard to reach their goals.  We appreciate the efforts of Richard Solberg as he seeks to promote this camp.

Special thanks go to our hardworking summer program directors and counseling staff who put in long hours and ministered to all of these youth over the summer.
